Crimson Gold
Jafar Panahi
A stunning collaboration between directors Jafar Panahi and Abbas Kiarostami (who wrote the screenplay) that was banned in its native Iran, Crimson Gold is a powerful indictment of a repressive society masked within the story of a pizza delivery man pushed over the edge. Told in a flashback, the film navigates the polarized streets of Tehran and reveals the class inequalities, corruption and suffering that eventually lead to the demise of Hussein (Hussein Emadeddin, a diagnosed schizophrenic and real-life pizza delivery man). "A stark, minimalist near-masterpiece" (Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune). In Farsi with English subtitles. Iran, 2003, 95 mins.

The Mirror
Jafar Panahi
A young girl becomes lost in the hustle and bustle of Tehran, but the spirit of childhood takes over as guide when the charming little actress playing the girl decides she has had enough of the role. The director of The White Balloon shows how reality and fantasy merge in the playful mind of a child and through the illusion of cinema. "Dazzling...An ingenious piece of cinematic gamesmanship...as daringly original as any film this year" (Andrew Johnston, Time Out New York). Winner, Best Foreign Language Film, New York Film Critics Circle Awards. Videocassette in Farsi with English subtitles. Iran, 1997, 95 mins.

Offside
Jafar Panahi
A provocative and ultimately triumphant film from Jafar Panahi that deals with a group of Iranian women disguised as boys who attempt to sneak into a soccer match at a Tehran stadium, where they are forbidden by law. When they're discovered by police, Offside has the potential to devolve into harsh reprisals, but instead focuses on the absurd and comical interplay between the frustrated girls and their jailers, who have no choice but to watch over and argue with the women over an arbitrary law while a roaring championship game goes on not 100 feet away. Panahi was officially banned from filming this tale, but his sly, covert production succeeds where his characters failed. "A wonderfully funny, outspoken shaggy-dog story" (Entertainment Weekly). In Persian with English subtitles. Iran, 2006, 93 mins.
