The Fifth Reaction
Tahmineh Milani
From the controversial director of Hidden Half and Two Women comes another tale of the clash between modernism and tradition in contemporary Iran. A progressive, recently widowed teacher and her conservative, controlling father-in-law fight for custody of her two small children. According to tradition, Fereshteh should remain in her father-in-law's home with her children, but she refuses. Afraid of losing custody of the boys, she decides to disappear with help from her women friends. Tahmineh Milani's film captures the tumult of a nation plagued by the conflicting philosophies of hard-line religious groups and an educated, cosmopolitan population. In Farsi with English subtitles. Iran, 2003, 107 mins.

The Hidden Half
Tahmineh Milani
This controversial film from Tahmineh Milani (Two Women, The Legend of a Sigh), and some of the director's outspoken remarks, led to her arrest by Iran's Revolutionary Court (she was later released). Fundamentalists objected to the sympathetic portrayal of those who fought against the Islamic Revolution in this story of a woman remembering her affair with a married man in the aftermath of the overthrow of the Shah. This past romance is revealed through a letter to her husband, a judge who will be hearing the case of a woman facing execution. "...a very serious drama about post-revolutionary Iranian politics, which is far more complex than we've been led to believe by substandard U.S. reporting" (David Ehrenstein, New Times Los Angeles). In Farsi with English subtitles. Iran, 2001, 103 mins.

The Legend of a Sigh
Tahmineh Milani
This strikingly feminist film draws on a legend of Azarbayejan province. Ah is a handsome young man who materializes to succor those in need whenever he hears a heartfelt sigh. Milani's protagonist is a woman novelist, suffering from writer's block, who, with the help of Ah, experiences the lives of four women from different social strata. From a wealthy Tehrani who feels unfulfilled by her life, to a poor servant, to a Turkman wife unable to leave the house without her husband's permission, to a rebellious student, the film offers a fascinating portrait of a range of Iranian women and their problems. Farsi with English subtitles. Iran, 1991, 105 mins.

Two Women
Tahmineh Milani
A bold, dramatic attack on the treatment of women in post-revolutionary Iran by the country's most important and outspoken feminist filmmaker. The story follows the friendship of two university students. While one is able to find a good job and a happy marriage, the other is subjected to the most severe inequities of the male-dominated, fundamentalist society. She is pursued by a stalker who commits an act of violence, but her "improper" independence is also blamed for the attack. Her father commits her to an arranged marriage in which her past liberties are denied and her spirit is broken. Government censors held up Milani's script for seven years, but the film became a major success with audiences. "...impressive, unsettling, deeply felt..." (Lawrence Van Gelder, New York Times). In Farsi with English subtitles. Iran, 1999, 96 mins.

Unwanted Woman
Tahmineh Milani
From acclaimed director (Two Women , Hidden Half) comes this searing tale about the struggles of women in modern-day Iran. Poor Sima puts up with her philandering and abusive husband, Ahmad. He is so blatant with his indiscretions that he asks Sima to cover for him when he plans a trip with his girlfriend, Saba. In an Iran where unmarried couples can be arrested for fraternizing in public, Ahmad needs Sima to pretend that Saba is his cousin--a situation that proves both humiliating and dangerous. Marila Zarei (The Fifth Reaction) and Amin Hayayee (Coma), two of Iran's newest stars, shine in this controversial drama. In Persian with English subtitles. Iran, 2005, 103 min.
