Beginning Japanese Course
(Now available in a CD version!) This book and cassette/CD course is perfect for independent or small group study, and is thorough, comprehensive, and widely regarded as the best available. This course provides introductory teaching materials for spoken Japanese in the "standard" dialect of educated inhabitants of Tokyo, and is intended for general use by English speakers. Special attention has been given both in the text and in the tapes to make this course as useful as possible for self-instruction. Learning to speak the language at normal speed is emphasized since the aim of the course is to teach you to understand and speak the everyday language just as it is spoken by the Japanese. Although not developed by the Foreign Service Institute, this course follows the FSI model in every respect, with a method that focuses on guided imitation, and whose aim is an automatic ability to speak the language.
