Weekend Stories (Complete Set)
A Woman's Business/Deceptive Charm/Little Faith/The Dilatory Line
The Soul Sings/Unwritten Law/The Last Circle/The Hidden Treasure
Krzysztof Zanussi
Krzysztof Zanussi's Weekend Stories is, like Kieslowski's The Decalogue (which Zanussi's TOR studio produced), a series of intimate, human dramas in which the characters grapple intellectually and emotionally with real world moral dilemmas. Produced for Polish television, these incisive films reflect the ascetic, intelligent approach of the writer-director, who has been a major figure in European cinema since his award-winning work at the Lodz film school in the '60s. Simple yet profound, Weekend Stories is an important offering from a prolific and accomplished artist. In Polish with English subtitles. Four-volume set. Poland, 1996-2000, 434 mins.

A Year of the Quiet Sun
Krzysztof Zanussi
This "small, quiet film of enormous power" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times) is the story of a Polish widow who meets an American soldier involved in war crimes investigation following World War II. Although they can communicate only through gesture, they find much to share. The exquisite, sad beauty of this film inspired Ebert to describe Krzysztof Zanussi as "arguably the best filmmaker in Europe right now." Maja Komorowska (The Decalogue, The Maids of Wilko) and Scott Wilson (In Cold Blood, The Ninth Configuration) star. A Golden Lion winner at the Venice Film Festival. In Polish and English with English subtitles. Poland/West Germany, 1984, 109 mins.
