Deepa Mehta
Deepa Mehta overcame death threats, arson, and riots to craft this triumphant dramatic film, which hews to its thematic vision despite the intense pressure of religious extremists and censors. Set in 1938, as Gandhi rises to power and Britain loses its grip on the Indian colony, the film tells of a young girl (Sarala) who is married and widowed at the age of eight before being sent away to live in penitence. Using lush, beautifully photographed images to underscore her themes, Mehta exposes the brutal oppression of an entire class of women. "[A] work of gorgeous fury" (Village Voice). In Hindi with English subtitles. India, 2006, 117 mins.

Bollywood Hollywood
Deepa Mehta
A delightful hybrid of Eastern and Western styles, in which Bollywood stars perform in North American locations using Indian music and Hollywood choreography. The plot follows a handsome young Indian-born millionaire (Rahul Khanna) who dates a Caucasian pop star (Jessica Pare) despite objections from his parents. When the singer is tragically killed in a car accident, the millionaire's mother goes too far in trying to wrest control of her son's life. "Will prove infectious to those audiences who find themselves sharing the director's frivolous frame of mind" (Washington Post). Canada, 2002, 105 mins.

Deepa Mehta
Deepa Mehta's second film in her elements trilogy (following the controversial Fire) is set during the 1947 partition of India and follows a young girl, her family, and their neighbors as they struggle to remain neutral when civil war explodes. A romantic rivalry and other matters of daily life are eventually engulfed in the violent conflicts between Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs. The film builds in intensity until reaching a powerful, unforgettable conclusion.
