Artes Latinae places in the student's hands all of the tools necessary to learn and love the Latin language. Its systematic “programmed” approach to learning provides consistent review and immediate reinforcement. It is the only self-teaching program that fulfills the foreign language requirement for college. Unlike other programs, Artes Latinae draws on the widest range of Classical, Medieval, and Renaissance authors. In addition, the DVD-ROM format of Artes Latinae affords users access to 3 pronunciations - Restored Classical, Continental/ Ecclesiastical, and American Scholastic. There are two levels available: Level 1 DVD-ROM Complete Package, and Level 2 Complete DVD-ROM Package.
Students learn through active involvement. They listen, speak, read, and write as they work through the course. Artes Latinae's step-by-step program of instruction allows students to work in their own time and at their own pace. Students are able to gauge their own progress and to correct their own mistakes through the systematic feedback they receive. Artes Latinae is appropriate for a wide range of ages and abilities, with students from ages nine through adult using the program.
You are connected to an extensive, nationwide network of expert teachers and professors available to answer your technical and pedagogical questions. Artes Latinae was field-tested by 13 pilot teachers in 11 institutions throughout the country from junior high to the college level. It is the only program with more than 30 years of proven success. Nearly 200,000 students worldwide have learned Latin using Artes Latinae! In addition users receive the Artes Latinae Latin Newsletter, a seasonal publication containing updates on Artes Latinae products, a calendar of upcoming events, Latin games, puzzles, and news.
Students can learn an ancient language via modern technology through Bolchazy-Carducci Publishers' DVD/CD-ROM version 2.0 of Artes Latinae. Designed by Dr. Jeffrey Lyon, based on Dr. Waldo Sweet's original, the DVD/CD-ROM version incorporates text, graphics and sound into a computer accessible format. At the click of an icon, students can choose one of three pronunciations: Dr. Robert Sonkowsky and Dr. Barbara Sonkowsky using the Restored Classical; Nancy Llewellyn and Dr. Clarence Miller using the Continental/Ecclesiastical; or Dr. Waldo Sweet's original American Scholastic version:
Each DVD/CD-ROM package includes a manual, a reference notebook, a unit test booklet, a guide to the unit tests, a graded reader and the manual for the graded reader. All components of the CD-ROM package can also be purchased individually. The DVD/CD-ROM disk replaces the student textbooks and the cassettes of the traditional format.
The readers feature proverbs, poems, and other readings from the ancient authors. They allow students to practice the Latin they are learning and to experience more examples of the structures they have mastered. The accompanying teacher's guides include translations, additional readings, and grammatical and cultural notes.
These notebooks provide students with a venue for recording and summarizing the material covered, an opportunity for guided practice, and a concise review of the important rules of grammar.
The booklets provide a means for evaluating student progress and identifying material needing further review. Accompanying teacher's guides provide test answers in addition to information on testing procedures and suggestions for additional tests.
