Dictionaries
Word Translator provides and uses a system of two paired or 'coupled' dictionaries that together make up any combined bilingual, bi-directional dictionary. For example, for German and English, there is a German-English dictionary (where German is the 'source' language and English is the 'destination' language) and a separate English-German dictionary (where English is the 'source' language and German is the 'destination' language). You must always select and use the appropriate dictionary that coincides with the "source" language you are working with.

All changes and additions you make to any dictionary are saved and stored in separate "paired" User Dictionary files in the (default) Word Translator directory. User Dictionary files are easily identified by the 'A' following the main dictionary designation. For example, the User Dictionary files for a German-English module are identified as GERENGA.* and for an English-German module as ENGGERA.*.

Speech Files
Pre-recorded speech files are located on the Word Translator CD-ROM and you will need to have the Word Translator CD-ROM in your CD-ROM drive to be able to access them. At this time, The only pre-recorded speech files on the CD-ROM are Polish, German, US English and British English. The Speech files you yourself record using the Computer Voice option are written and saved to the ("default") Word Translator directory. They carry the designation "SPK" immediately following the abbreviated name of the "source language dictionary (e.g. ENA or ENG for English and POL for Polish) and immediately preceding the (.) (period) and the file type designation (e.g. ".NDX"). The speech files you record using the My Voice option are not saved to the hard drive.

Add New Words, Phrases & Translations
There are several different methods you can use to add new "base words" and translations - while using the Word Translation, "standard" (interactive) Document Translation or Spell-Checking Highlighted Text modes, or you can add words, phrases and translations while working directly inside Word Translator. If you enter a word that you typed either in your word processor or directly inside Word Translator that is not entered in the dictionary's list of "base words" and phrases, you may add the word as well as any number of translations. You will know when a word or phrase is not entered in the dictionary when Word Translator fails to display any translations for it and/or only displays an alphabetic listing of dictionary entries and the highlighted word approximates where the new word would occur if it were entered in the dictionary. You can only enter new "base phrases" when working directly inside Word Translator.

Characters and Fonts
The ability, to type both upper and lower case accented characters (such as Á, á, À, à, Â, â, Ä, ä, Ã, ã, Å, å) is essential for most Western European languages. With any version of Windows and Word Translator, you do not need any other program to produce the accented characters you need for any Western European language. You can use any one of three different methods to type accented characters.

All Cyrillic, East European, Greek, and Japanese versions of Word Translator for Windows include a language appropriate TrueType font that is installed when you install Word Translator. A TrueType font is supplied with these languages because they require characters that cannot be produced by any of the English TrueType fonts (e.g. Times New Roman, Arial, Courier, etc.) may you normally use.

Operation Modes

Word Translation Mode
When Word Translator is loaded into your computer's memory and Word Translation mode is selected, Word Translator will translate any single, individual word highlighted in your Windows word processor or application after you simultaneously press the "default" Ctrl + Shift hot key combination to call up Word Translator. Word Translation mode only processes single, individual words so even if you highlight and entire sentence or paragraph it will only process the first word or phrase. Word Translation mode is the "default" mode so, no matter which mode you may have previously selected, whenever you open the Setup window or first load Word Translator into your computer's memory, Word Translator will revert to the "default" Word Translation mode.

Spell-Checking As-You-Type Mode
With this mode enabled, Word Translator will spell-check words as you type them in your word processor or application. Word Translator will accomplish a spell-check of the "source" language of the selected Current Dictionary. Spell-Checking-As-You-Type can help you increase your ability to correctly spell words in a foreign language so it is of particular help to language students. Spell-Checking As-You-Type uses the "source" dictionary as its sole reference source so if a word is not entered in the dictionary the program will not be able to spell-check it.

You can enable and disable the Spell-Checking Beep and Suggestions options for Spell-Checking As-You-Type in the Setup window. By enabling the Beep option (checking the check box), you will hear a warning sound (if you have a sound device) whenever Word Translator detects that you have misspelled or mistyped a word entered in the dictionary or typed a word not entered in the selected Current Dictionary.

Before selecting Spell-Checking As-You-Type, ensure that the appropriate dictionary module is selected as the Current Dictionary in either the Setup window or the main Word Translator window. For example, if you wanted to spell-check German, a German-English dictionary module must be selected as the Current Dictionary. By enabling the Suggestions option (checking the check box), a Suggested Spelling window will appear whenever Word Translator detects that you have misspelled or mistyped a word entered in the dictionary module or typed a word not entered in selected Current Dictionary.

Spell-Check Highlighted Text Mode
With the Spell-Check Highlighted Text mode selected, Word Translator will spell-check any text you highlight in your word processor or application. Word Translator will only accomplish a spell-check of the "source" language of the selected Current Dictionary. Like Spell-Checking As-You-Type, this spell-check mode also uses the "source" dictionary as its sole reference source.

Before selecting Spell-Check Highlighted Text mode, ensure that the appropriate "source" dictionary module is selected as the Current Dictionary in either the Setup window or the main Word Translator window. For example, if you wanted to spell-check German, a German-English dictionary module must be selected as the Current Dictionary. Conversely, if you want to spell-check English, an English-German module should be selected.

Prediction & Spell-Checking Mode
With Prediction selected, Word Translator will spell-check any word as you type it in your Windows word processor or application that contains fewer characters than the Prediction setting in the Setup window (5 is the "default"). It will also provide a Prediction of the word or phrase you are typing (by displaying a list of words and phrases entered in the Current Dictionary) when the number of characters you type equals the Prediction setting in the Setup window. Prediction uses the "source" language of the of the Current Dictionary. You may change the number of characters setting for Prediction in the Setup window by either clicking your cursor inside the box, backspacing over the displayed number and retyping another number or by highlighting the number and immediately retyping another number. We recommend maintaining the "default" Prediction setting of five (5) characters until you have become accustomed to using the Prediction mode.

Document Translation Modes
Word Translator's two Document Translation modes will help you translate highlighted text in your word processor or application word-by-word and phrase-by phrase. You may select from either the (interactive) Standard Document Translation mode or the (automatic) Quick Document Translation mode. At this time, Quick Document Translation mode is disabled until such time as you add approximately 200 new base words/phrases and corresponding translations to the dictionary. This is because this mode uses the first or top listed translation for any word or phrase it recognizes. Both Document Translation modes go through the highlighted text in your word processor or application and help you build a translation. Either Document Translation mode can save you time by providing a first "rough" translation of a complete document, paragraph or selected text.

• Quick Document Translation automatically selects only the first or top listed translation for any recognized word or phrase (because it is in the Current Dictionary). Any misspelled word or words (that are not entered in the dictionary) are "skipped" or carried over "as is." Quick Document Translation mode is inoperative until such time as you have added approximately 200 new entries to your dictionary. This is because Quick Document Translation only uses the first or top listed translation for any recognized word or phrase.

• Standard Document Translation permits you to more closely control the translation process by displaying words and phrases with more than a single translation as they are identified by Word Translator. It then allows you to select a specific translation from the Translation List for use in the translated text. "Standard" (interactive) Document Translation also allows you to add new "base words" and translations that are not entered in the dictionary as they are identified in your document. You can also change, alter or delete dictionary entries during the "standard" (interactive) Document Translation process. While you are building your dictionary to include most of the words, special terms and phrases you need for your writing, it's best to use the "standard" (interactive) Document Translation mode.
