Un Coeur en Hiver Claude Sautet Claude Sautet's 13th feature is loosely based on Lermontov's novel A Hero of Our Time. Two violin makers (Daniel Auteuil and Andre Dussollier) are affected when a beautiful violinist (Emmanuelle Beart) enters their lives. The film addresses the question of whether Auteuil is able to reconcile his cold, rigid nature with his deep, emotional attraction to Beart. With Elizabeth Bourgine, Myriam Boyer, Brigitte Catillon, and Maurice Garrel as a brilliant music teacher. Letterboxed. Includes cast and crew interviews, Claude Sautet interview, excerpt from documentary on Claude Sautet, trailers, 5.1 sound, and 8 pp. commemorative booklet. In French with English subtitles. France, 1992, 101 mins. DVD | $44.95
Cesar and Rosalie Claude Sautet Yves Montand, Romy Schneider and Sami Frey star in this mature, witty look at a woman torn between two lovers and the unexpected changes that this triangle puts in play. "Whenever you think the relationships are going to be stabilized into formulas, the picture wiggles free. It's a fluky, wry ode on the imperfect, haphazard nature of romantic love" (Pauline Kael, The New Yorker). French with English subtitles. France, 1972, 106 mins. DVD | $44.95
Classe Tous Risques Claude Sautet French filmmaker Claude Sautet (Un Coeur en Hiver) began his career with a string of gangster films not unlike Rififi, and Classe Tous Risques (The Big Risk) is probably the finest example. Lino Ventura stars as a career criminal who has started a family in Milan while in hiding from the French police. He decides to return to Paris for one last job, but when the heist goes south, he must enlist a young crook (Jean-Paul Belmondo, Breathless) to help him navigate the now-unfamiliar Parisian underworld. "The French New Wave descended more or less directly from mainstream French crime films made in the 1950s, and if there is a missing link in that evolution, it might be this one" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). With cinematography by Ghislain Cloquet and music by Georges Delerue. This Criterion Collection edition has a newly restored high-def digital transfer, and includes Claude Sautet ou La magie invisible, a documentary by N.T. Binh and Dominique Rabourdin; archival interview footage with Ventura; original French and U.S. theatrical trailers; improved subtitle translation; and a booklet with essays by director Bertrand Tavernier and Binh, a reprinted interview with Sautet, and a tribute by Jean-Pierre Melville. In French with optional English subtitles. France, 1960, 103 min. DVD | $44.95
