French Directors - Jacques Demy

Donkey Skin
Jacques Demy
Catherine Deneuve stars in this unusual and exquisitely realized fairy tale from director Jacques Demy, based on a story by 17th century author Charles Perrault (Cinderella). Before the queen of a enchanted kingdom dies, she makes her husband promise that he'll never marry anyone less beautiful than her. The only woman who fits this description, however, is the king's daughter (Deneuve, who also plays the queen). The frightened young girl enlists the help of a fairy godmother to save her from this marriage, and with her godmother's help she flees the kingdom in her father's prize donkey suit. An enchanting treat for both children and adults, Demy's film is "gentle, charming, and opulently beautiful" (The New York Times). The DVD is letterboxed, includes original trailer, interview with Mag Bodard, The Illustrated Peau d'Ane featurette, and English and Spanish subtitle options. In French with English subtitles. France, 1971, 90 mins.

But she is still in love with Michel, who had left her with their child when he went off to seek his fortune. After spending the night with another man, Michel reappears, rich, and takes her away. The Young Girls of Rochefort
Jacques Demy
Jacques Demy's companion piece to The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a lighter, even more playful variation on the musical form, but there is deep emotion under its frothy surface. Real-life sisters Catherine Deneuve and Francoise Dorleac (in her next-to-last film) star as on-screen siblings looking for love and a career in the music world. Among the men who become romantic possibilities for them is Gene Kelly, in his last significant musical role. Demy also wrote the lyrics for Michel Legrand's wonderful music. "Demy's grand, colorful, and unorthodox approach to the material pays tribute to the American musical yet mixes in accoutrements of French poetic realism: dreams and reality coexist more strangely and stubbornly than in most other musicals" (Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader). The film was re-released to much acclaim in 1998, with restored color and sound supervised by Demy's widow, Agnes Varda. In French with English subtitles. France, 1967, 125 mins.
