Chinese Directors - John Woo

Broken Arrow
John Woo
John Travolta and Christian Slater star as two fighter pilots with an apparently solid working relationship, a relationship cemented by friendship. Money has the power to upset this balance of trust and the friends find themselves on opposite sides of a dangerous equation battling over two stolen nuclear warheads. Tense and action-filled, this drama offers non-stop adventure. In English. USA, 1996, 108 mins.

Face/Off
John Woo
John Woo's over-the-top thrill ride is an absurd, action-packed, scene-chewing competition between John Travolta, an FBI agent, and his worst enemy, Nicolas Cage, a psychopathic terrorist who killed his son. The FBI assigns Travolta to undergo plastic surgery to borrow the face of the captured, comatose Cage in order to play him and gather information from the terrorist's crime ring to find and dismantle a bomb that Cage set. When Cage awakes without his face, he must find revenge wearing Travolta's. Explosive fun as Travolta and Cage play each other and take turns wearing the black and white hats. With Joan Allen and Gina Gershon. USA, 1997, 140 mins.

The Hand of Death (aka Countdown in Kung-Fu)
John Woo
In many ways this is a typical (although fairly enjoyable) kung-fu flick, but it is notable for the cast and crew who would go on to become some of the most important figures in Hong Kong cinema. Director John Woo, calling the shots on his third feature, was still more than a decade away from A Better Tomorrow, and stars Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao were still mainly supporting players working their way up to stardom. Mandarin with English subtitles. Hong Kong, 1975, 95 mins.

Hard Target
John Woo
The American debut of Hong Kong action auteur John Woo (The Killer, Bullet in the Head) is an operatic reworking of The Most Dangerous Game. Set in New Orleans, the story follows a group of aristocrats who brutally attack homeless Vietnam veterans for sport, cruelly orchestrated by a debonair mercenary (Lance Hendriksen). Jean-Claude Van Damme plays a sea merchant reluctantly drawn into the mix when a beautiful lawyer (Yancy Butler) enlists his support in tracking down her father. With Wilford Brimley. In English. USA, 1993.

Last Hurrah for Chivalry
John Woo
A variation on the classic 1970's style kung-fu flick, starting out as a routine revenge drama, but bringing in a sense of character missing from most of the genre. The film progressively veers away from the expected development to question the motivations of its main characters, although with plenty of good action along the way, including a classic scene in which the heroes fight the deadly "sleeping watchman." An early exploration by director John Woo of one of his favorite themes, that of loyalty in a chaotic world. Mandarin with English subtitles. Hong Kong, 1979, 97 mins.

Mission: Impossible 2
John Woo
John Woo's sequel to Brian De Palma's 1996 blockbuster hit tops its predecessor for both action thrills and melodramatic kicks. In a story that seems much closer to Woo's own Face Off than the first movie or the original TV series, Tom Cruise returns as secret agent Ethan Hunt, out to save the world from diabolical Dougray Scott and a deadly virus. Thandie Newton plays the sexy thief who is desired by both hero and villain. Also starring Ving Rhames and an uncredited Anthony Hopkins. The DVD is letterboxed and includes John Woo's commentary, three behind-the-scenes segments, alternate title sequence, "Mission Improbable" MTV parody short, photo gallery, theatrical trailers and more. In English. USA, 2000, 124 mins.

Once a Thief
John Woo
While still boasting some fine action sequences, this charming heist film highlights John Woo's lighter side. Chow Yun Fat, Leslie Cheung and Cherie Chung play art thieves who decide to turn the tables on their mentor after he double-crosses them. A favorite of Woo fans, filled with wonderful comic moments and especially charming performances from the three leads. Inspired by Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief, the film takes its title from a 1964 film starring Alain Delon, one of Woo's favorite actors. Chinese with English subtitles. Hong Kong, 1991, 107 mins.

Windtalkers
John Woo
John Woo returns to his eternal theme of the bonds of loyalty forged through violence in this World War II drama that draws on the inspiration of classic Hollywood war films yet still puts forth a surprisingly strong anti-military message. Nicholas Cage stars as a platoon leader teetering on breakdown who reluctantly befriends the Navajo soldier (Adam Beach) brought in as one of the "code talkers" who used their native language to keep vital information from the enemy. Less hyper-kinetic than Woo's Hong Kong films, Windtalkers stresses the realism of its extreme violence, while its consideration of the real causes and costs of warfare put the more celebrated Blackhawk Down (a similar film in many ways) to shame. In English. USA, 2002, 134 mins.
